Wikipedia:Requests for adminship

Requests for adminship (RfA) is the process by which the Wikipedia community decides who will become administrators (also known as admins or sysops), who are users with access to additional technical features that aid in maintenance. A user either submits his/her own request for adminship (a self-nomination) or is nominated by another user. Please be familiar with the administrators' reading list, how-to guide, and guide to requests for adminship before submitting your request.

About RfA[edit source]

The community grants administrator status to trusted users, so nominees should have been on Wikipedia long enough for people to determine whether they are trustworthy. Administrators are held to high standards of conduct because other editors often turn to them for help and advice.

Nomination standards
There are no official prerequisites for adminship, other than having an account and having a basic level of trust from other editors. The community looks for a variety of things in candidates, and everybody has their own opinion on this; for examples of what the community is looking for, look at some of the English Wikipedia's successful requests and some unsuccessful ones.
Decision process
Any user may nominate another user with an account. Self-nominations are permitted. If you are unsure about nominating yourself for adminship, you may wish to consult admin coaching first, so as to get an idea of what the community might think of your request. Nominations remain posted for seven days from the time the nomination is posted on this page, during which time users give their opinions, ask questions, and make comments. At the end of that period, a MediaWiki steward will review the discussion to see whether there is a consensus for promotion. Historically, the line between successful and unsuccessful candidacies lay at 75% support, though a few have failed with more support or succeeded with less support making this number less relevant.
Expressing opinions
Any Wikipedian with an account is welcome to comment in the Support, Oppose and Neutral sections. The candidate may respond to the comments of others. Certain comments may be discounted if there are suspicions of fraud; these may be the contributions of very new editors, sockpuppets, and meatpuppets. Please explain your opinion by including a short explanation of your reasoning. Your input will carry more weight if it is accompanied by supporting evidence.
To add a comment, click the "Voice your opinion" link for the relevant candidate. Any Wikipedians, including users who do not have an account and/or are not logged in ("anons"), are invited to participate in the comments section and ask questions. Always be respectful towards others in your comments. You may wish to review w:en:Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in adminship discussions.

Nominating[edit source]

Nominations must be accepted by the user in question. If you wish to nominate a user, contact them first before making the nomination page. If they accept, create the nomination and ask them to sign their acceptance. To nominate either yourself or another user for adminship, follow the instructions on this page. The nomination may be considered "malformed" and removed if you do not follow these instructions.

Voice your opinion (talk page) (1/0/0); Scheduled to end 07:29, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Aliasd: Hi all, Aliasd has been an admin here on the Tok Pisin Wikipedia for the last two months on a temporary basis. See his previous successful nomination. I'd like to nominate him to remain as an administrator here. He's a committed and thoughtful contributor who has a lot to offer to the project, and has demonstrated concern and care for the Tok Pisin Wikipedia throughout his involvement. I recommend that we extend his term as administrator. Wantok (toktok) 07:53, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here:

I accept this nomination with thanks. Aliasd 00:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate[edit source]

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia as an administrator. You may wish to answer the following optional questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What admin work do you intend to take part in?
A: There is still a lot of work to be done fine-tuning protected templates, and incorporating user scripts.

2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?
A: I am still very proud of my Image contributions to commons and my work with english WikiProject Melanesia. See en:User:Aliasd/Images.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: This wiki itself experienced a fairly major conflict a couple of months ago with a major shift in administrative power. Prior to that, there was an issue with the same central user who was using administrative tools on this wiki in such a manner that was contrary to the goals and intent of the foundation. The general MO was this:
  1. Attempt to open a channel of discussion with the user in question to try and create a truce. Most conflicts are resolved here. Keep open to the fact that you yourself may be wrong, and there is more than 2 sides to any particular story.
  2. If this is unsuccessful, introduce a willing and experienced third party.. ideally a person who will see the entire situation from a third-person perspective. Be patient with this process and let it take its course. If a user is just trying to make trouble he will generally disappear after a while here, especially if you do not take an argumentative tone.
  3. Only if this is unsuccessful in resolving the situation, open a formal channel of discussion.

Wantok has been true to his name from within this project. He has helped people where they have needed it, and has been a friend to every user on this project, no matter how difficult they have become. He has proven himself capable to handle admin tools carefully and effectively, and has always considered actions such as blocking to be so much a last resort that he has never blocked a user in his temporary ops period, in contrast to his predecessor who blocked numerous users in a shorter period of time.

This wiki needs administrators with the fairness and ability of Wantok. I am proud to yet again nominate this man for "the mop".

A: As before, fighting vandalism, deleting pages as needed, protecting pages as needed.
2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?
A: So far I've created or cleaned up a lot of the geographic information here, and I've done (or polished) much of the translation into Tok Pisin. At present, as far as I know, I'm the only fully fluent Tok Pisin speaker active on the Tok Pisin Wikipedia, so I play a general review-and-cleanup role. I have a much longer history of contributions on the English Wikipedia. At present I'm also a temporary administrator on the Tok Pisin Wiktionary, and the Tok Pisin translator of the overall MediaWiki software (i.e. the navigation, and all the text on Wikipedia/Wiktionary sites that is not entered by users).
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: Very rarely - most conflicts or misunderstandings can be sorted out by maintaining respect and politeness. I've had one difficult conflict with an ex-administrator of this project, who has since been stripped of his privileges by Mediawiki stewards. Other than that, I've had good relations with other editors.
