Long Wikipedia

Heya Jeneme, and welcome to Tok Pisin Wikipedia! I guess a great way to learn is to read some of these articles, and start to understand the context of them. Tok Pisin has a lot of similarities to English and can be picked up reasonably quickly. If you know anyone who is fluent in Tok Pisin, they are, of course, the best people to learn off! Welcome[edit source]

Welcome, Jeneme! Good to have you here - we have a very small active user base on this project so far. You might find some of the material here useful in learning Tok Pisin - but don't rely on it too much, as a lot of the Tok Pisin here is actually still sub-standard and/or incorrect - we're still working through it to correct the language.

If you're serious about learning Tok Pisin, the best resources I can recommend are:

Country articles[edit source]

Hi again. Great! All efforts here are appreciated. We have some country articles, but it is not at all complete. You can see the articles we have so far in the categories under Category:Ol kantri (Category: Countries) - see the subcategories:

I've recently added a large table of countries to the North America article - that was directly copied from the English Wikipedia, then a few country names changed to suit Tok Pisin, and country data templates added. You are most welcome to start hitting red links on that list and creating country articles.

You can write articles in English initially if you don't feel confident in Tok Pisin yet, and mark them as needing review/translation by a Tok Pisin speaker.

At the bottom of each article, I suggest you add this:

{{stub}}
{{TPreview}}
[[Category:Ol kantri long Not Amerika]]

  • Stub: only if the article is still short - if you create a long article, leave that out, of course!
  • TPreview: this template marks the article as needing translation/review by a Tok Pisin speaker.
  • Continent category: the above is for North America - obviously change to suit the continent from the list above.

Happy editing! Wantok 07:05, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

  • Re doing a continent-wide country list template - great! Sounds good to me. I'm happy to translate text into Tok Pisin when you're ready. Wantok 07:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
    • Another thought - you might want to use a country infobox for these countries.... like {{Infobox Country}}. Most (all?) of the fields are optional. Cheers, Wantok 08:03, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
      • I've added some templates that were missing, and done some translation, so the infobox on Saina looks better now. I haven't yet translated the footnotes and a few minor things. Nice work! Wantok 11:28, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
        • Sure, feel free to let me know when you've finished adding an infobox to a page. Wantok 13:29, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
          • Infobox on Yunaitet Kingdom is there now - just a typo - you had "Infobox country" instead of "Infobox Country" (uppercase C). Cheers, Wantok 09:40, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
            • Sorry, I didn't understand "template aboues". Do you mean "template abuse"? Cheers, Wantok 09:43, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Just thought I would also drop by to offer my salutations. It is good to see a small community gathering here, let me know if you need my help! Aliasd 08:13, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Provinces of Spain[edit source]

Generally for encyclopedic purposes, Spain is first subdivided into it's autonomous communities and anonymous cities (of which there are 19, much like PNG Provinces.) before being further subdivided into it's provinces, (of which there are 50, much like PNG Districts.) You can ask Wantok for the translation of Autonomous Community! Hope this helps. Aliasd 22:01, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Category for capital cities[edit source]

Hi, just letting you know that I've created a new category for capitals: Category:Ol kapitol bilong kantri and changed all the capital city articles to be in the new category. I've deleted the old Category:Kapitol bilong kantri. Please use the new one now. (It's just a small correction of the Tok Pisin title - we need the "Ol" to indicate plural.) Cheers, Wantok 11:15, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Long and bilong[edit source]

What's the difference between long and bilong? Good question - this can be confusing for beginners. Long is the most commonly used preposition, and its meaning covers words like at, to, from, or on in English. Bilong covers words like of, for, from, or in order to in English. One of its meanings is directly possessive - toktok bilong mi means "my talk"; kapital bilong Ostrelia means "Australia's capital". There are other word formations that include these words - for instance, bilong wanem which means why or because. The English equivalents are not exact. Other English preposition equivalents include: with = wantaim, in = insait long, but = tasol, like = olsem, on/above = antap long, under = ananit long, and many others. Hope that helps - let me know if it's not clear enough. Cheers, Wantok 01:18, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Country names[edit source]

Hi - please see news re country names at Haus bilong toktok. Cheers, Wantok 06:44, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Infobox for languages[edit source]

Hi, I've added an infobox for articles about languages- {{Infobokis Tokples}}. It uses the same properties as the en-wikipedia's "Infobox Language". You can see it being used on Tok Itali. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 09:46, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Almazán[edit source]

  • Sure - here is the translation:
Almazán emi wanpela taun long Soria provins, Castile na León, Spen.

Administrators[edit source]

Hi, re admins - we had two (myself and Aliasd) for a few months mid last year, but not since, because there was so little activity on this site that no-one voted in the admin nominations... so given the low level of activity there probably won't be administrators here for a while, until at least a small group of active contributors is participating. ESEAP Conference 2018[edit source]

Hello,

I’m Biyanto from Wikimedia Indonesia who organized ESEAP Conference. ESEAP Conference 2018 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities throughout the ESEAP region: ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific. Taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 5–6 May 2018, this is the first regional conference for these Wikimedia communities.

East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific are the most under-represented regions within the Wikimedia community. There is a significant number of Wikimedia contributors in our regions, yet we continue to struggle in establishing a well-managed community. This conference will bring participants from various ESEAP communities together in order to better understand the issues and to look for solutions. It also aims to connect people of the Wikimedia movement within ESEAP regions, to share ideas, and to build regional collaborations that are impossible to achieve through online communication.

We’ve got a lot of participation from several countries, but we’re lacking from your country. As we need more participants from your country, we believe that your contribution and participation would be a valuable asset to the success of this event. If you would like to participate in the conference, please do fill the form as soon as possible (by April 5, 2018) and we’ll inform you if you get selected for the conference.

Thank you and we hope to see you soon. --Beeyan (talk) 16:52, 28 Mas 2018 (UTC)[reply]
